I don’t want the altitude of the terrain (elevation). I need to know if Google shows how high above the Earth I would need to be to see the amount of surface area shown in the map.
(I know how to calculate distance to the horizon. I want to know if Google can display the altitude.)

No way in Google Maps.
Download Google Earth.
It gives you your exact eye altitude. This info is on the right bottom, labeled that.
Your cursor gives you the elevation and lat/long co-ords, at where ever it is.
